Swords in Freemasonry

Wearing a sword in the Craft (blue) Lodge is a French and European Masonic specificity, unknown in the Anglo-Saxon Rites. In those Rites, only the Tyler is armed with a sword, to guard the Lodge.

In France, Freemasonry was assimilated to a chivalric order quite early on, as shown by the speech of the Chevalier Ramsay (1736). This speech, which traced the origin of Freemasonry back to the Crusades, opened the door to the development of high degrees with a chivalric character.

Masonic swords therefore appear in many systems of high degrees, but they are also very present in the Craft Lodge. In some Rites, such as the RER and the Traditional French Rite, all those present in Lodge systematically wear a sword. In other Rites, only a few Officers carry one, and all the members of the Lodge wear a sword only during initiation ceremonies.

The sword undeniably had a social dimension. An attribute of the nobility under the Ancien Régime, the bourgeois were flattered to be able to wear it in Lodge, and this custom was in a way a sign of equality.

From a symbolic point of view, the sword can represent the creative Word, or else the blade of Truth, which cuts between the True and the False.
