Masonic Hats & Caps
In several rites of Freemasonry the headdress is an attribute of the Master's degree or of the higher degrees: the Master is covered in Lodge according to precise usages, which vary from one rite and one obedience to another. This collection brings together Masonic hats and caps made to those usages, from the Master's black felt to the tricorne of the Rectified Scottish Rite.
Master's hats: felt, fedora, top hat
Several shapes are offered to the Master Mason: the classic black felt hat, plain and suited to every rite; the foldable fedora, practical for Brethren who travel between Lodges; the soft felt player hat, more contemporary in spirit; and the black felt top hat for solemn meetings. The hat embroidered with Lacs d'Amour (true lover's knots), worn in particular in the Scottish Rite and at Memphis-Misraïm, comes in several sizes, including a velvet edition.
Tricornes of the Rectified Scottish Rite (RSR) and of the Strict Observance
The tricorne is the chivalric attribute of the Inner Order of the Rectified Scottish Rite and of the Strict Templar Observance. We offer it with blue braid or gold braid, and also in a foldable version to make it easier to carry between meetings. These models accompany the Knights Beneficent of the Holy City (CBCS) in their ceremonies.
Higher degree caps for the AASR and the RSR
The higher degrees call for specific caps: the soft red cap of the 18th degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, bearing the Rose Croix cross or the Lacs d'Amour; the double cross cap of the 33rd degree; the Knight Beneficent CBCS caps with red cross or gold embroidery for the RSR. Each model keeps to the symbolism and the colours proper to its degree.
Quality felts, careful embroidery, a wide range of sizes: our Masonic headwear is chosen to last and to be worn with ease. Shipped from France, delivered in France and internationally. Do feel free to ask us to check the usage in force in your own rite before choosing a model.
Frequently asked questions about Masonic hats
Who is covered in Lodge?
The usage varies with the rite and the obedience: in some Lodges only the Worshipful Master is covered, in others every Master is. Check the usage of your own Lodge before choosing.
What is the difference between a tricorne and a cap?
The tricorne is the chivalric attribute of the Inner Order of the RSR and of the Strict Templar Observance. The cap marks one precise higher degree — red at the 18th degree of the AASR, with a double cross at the 33rd.
Choosing your Masonic hat: size, care, usages
How do I find my Masonic hat size?
Measure the circumference of your head with a tape, just above the ears and the eyebrows. Sizes run from 52 to 64 cm depending on the model; the size guide gives the equivalence with S, M, L and XL.
What is the difference between a soft cap and a rigid cap?
The difference is in how the headdress holds its shape, not in the rite: the rigid cap keeps its form, the soft one is easier to store. Both exist for the same degree in our catalogue of Masonic caps.
Which hat for the Rectified Scottish Rite?
The tricorne is the attribute of the Inner Order of the RSR and of the Strict Templar Observance. It exists with blue braid, with gold braid, and in a foldable version for travel; the other regalia proper to these rites are in the higher degrees of other rites collection.
Can a Masonic hat be folded for travel?
The Master's fedora and the RSR tricorne exist in a foldable version, designed to be carried between meetings. For rigid felts and top hats, a hat box prevents the shape from being lost.
Which cap at the 33rd degree of the AASR?
Several models coexist: double cross, triple cross and sextuple cross TPSGC, in white or in violet. The model expected depends on the jurisdiction, so check with your own Lodge before ordering.
How do I care for a felt hat?
Brush the felt in the direction of the nap and let it dry in open air, away from any direct heat source. Store it in a hat box rather than stacked.
Hat or kippah?
Both usages coexist depending on the obedience, and some Lodges admit the Master's black kippah where others expect the felt hat. See the Masonic kippahs collection.
