The wearing of the hat by the Masters during the Works dates back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains why the bourgeoisie of the time were so keen to be received as Masons. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were everyday headdresses in profane life. Only certain High Degrees prescribed specific ritual headdresses. This is the case of this violet cap, intended for the Grand Council of the American Cryptic Degrees.

This Cryptic Grand Council cap, violet and yellow in colour, is adorned with the emblem of the order, two gold braids and a gold cord.
