The wearing of a hat by Master Masons during the Work dates back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains the eagerness of the bourgeoisie to be made Masons at that time. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were ordinary headwear in everyday life. Only certain higher degrees prescribed specific ritual headwear. This is the case of this white or black toque, intended for the 33rd degree of the REAA.
This 33rd degree toque, in white or black, is decorated with a double-headed eagle and a Triangle with the number 33, two gold braids and a gold cord.
