The wearing of hats by Master Masons during Lodge work dates back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains the eagerness of the bourgeoisie to be received as Masons at that time. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were everyday headwear in profane life. Only certain higher degrees prescribed specific ritual headwear. This is the case with this red cap, intended for Freemasons of the American Royal Arch.
