The wearing of the hat by Masters during lodge work dates back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains the enthusiasm of the bourgeoisie to be received as Masons at that time. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were ordinary head coverings in secular life. Only certain Higher Degrees prescribed specific ritual headwear.
