The wearing of the hat by Master Masons during Lodge work goes back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains why the bourgeoisie of that time was so keen to be made Masons. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were everyday headwear of profane life. Only certain higher degrees prescribed specific ritual headwear.
