HIGHER DEGREES AASR (4°-33°)

Why special decorations for REAA high grades?

Today, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite (AASR) is the world's most widely practiced system of Masonic high degrees. Structured in 33 degrees, it calls for a unique symbolic progression, requiring precise decorations for each stage: aprons, cords, saltires and jewelry, as well as banners and lodge carpets.

Historical overview - From the Rite of Perfection to the REAA

Masonic decorations of the High Grades of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite (REAA)
The most widespread system of High Grades in the world is the Rite Écossais Ancien Accepté (REAA), of Franco-American origin. In 1786, Brother Étienne Morin sailed from Bordeaux to Santo Domingo with patents authorizing him to practice and disseminate a 25-grade Rite, commonly known as the Rite of Perfection, but whose real name was the Order of the Royal Secret. The Rite spread not only to Santo Domingo, but also to the southern United States, particularly Charleston, home to a large French community descended from Huguenot refugees who had fled during the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). With the addition of 8 new degrees, the Rite de Perfection became the 33-grade Rite Ecossais Ancien Accepté (REAA). In 1801, the world's first REAA Supreme Council was established in Charleston, followed in 1804 by the Supreme Council of France.
