The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains why the bourgeoisie of the time were so keen to be received as Masons. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were everyday headdresses in profane life. Only certain High Degrees or associated Orders prescribed specific ritual headdresses. This is the case of this fez, intended for the Sisters of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America.
This fez, in white velvet, is adorned with the Symbol of the Order, a red tassel 18 inches (45 cm) long and the embroidered name of the Court.
