The wearing of the hat by the Masters during the Works dates back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains why the bourgeoisie of the time were so keen to be received as Masons. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were everyday headdresses in profane life. Only certain High Degrees or associated Orders prescribed specific ritual headdresses. This is the case of this fez, intended for Freemasons who are members of Shriners International.

This Shriners Officer’s fez, in red or dark scarlet velvet, is adorned with the Symbol of the Order, a black tassel 24 inches (60 cm) long, and the name of the Chapter and the office, embroidered.
