The wearing of the hat by the Masters during the Works dates back to the 18th century, when it was associated with the wearing of the sword. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility partly explains why the bourgeoisie of the time were so keen to be received as Masons. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as these were everyday headdresses in profane life. Only certain High Degrees or associated Orders prescribed specific ritual headdresses. This is the case of this fez, intended for members of the OES.
This OES fez, in black velvet, is adorned with the Symbol of the Order and a black tassel 24 inches (60 cm) long.
