The symbolism of coloured gloves in Freemasonry
The colour of gloves worn in the lodge is never random. Each shade refers to a specific symbolism, closely tied to the practised rite:
- The red, evoking strength, courage, but also blood, is worn by the Prince of Jerusalem, 16th degree of the AASR (Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite) and sometimes by Knights Rose Croix, 18th degree.
- The blue, celestial and spiritual colour par excellence, is worn by Princes of the Tabernacle, 23rd degree of the AASR.
- The black, colour of affliction and mourning, but also of action and combat, is worn by the various degrees of Elect, as well as by certain chivalric degrees, namely the 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 17th, 22nd, and 30th degrees of the AASR.
