The Masonic compasses are displayed on the Worshipful Master’s pedestal or the Altar of Obligations, together with the Square. Depending on the degree, their opening and position may carry a particular meaning.

In the first degree, the Square lies over the Compasses; in the following degrees, their arrangement changes to express symbolically the initiatic progression. This Masonic ritual instrument thus plays a full part in the symbolic staging of the work.

It is not a mere technical tool, but a central element of the ritual furniture.
