The wearing of hats by Master Masons during ceremonies dates back to the 18th century, when they were combined with swords. The wearing of these two distinguishing marks of nobility explains in part the enthusiasm of the bourgeoisie to be accepted as Masons at the time. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as it was a common headgear in secular life. Only certain Higher Degrees prescribed specific ritual headgear. Such is the case with this white cap, intended for the Knight Beneficent of the Holy City, the highest degree of the Rectified Scottish Rite.
